How two sleep nerds found each other

We're both from tiny towns in Atlantic Canada — nine hours apart. A mutual friend connected our families, and when we both ended up at St. FX University, she told each of us: "Make sure you look for the other one." We don't actually remember when we met. We just remember being friends.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about the founders of a sleep company: we were both terrible sleepers. Marlee was on sleeping pills in university — told she'd be on them for life. Leah had accepted she was "a person who doesn't sleep" and went into shift work because she was already good at staying up all night.

Marlee found sleep science first. She did a rotation through a sleep lab, moved back east to work at the only private sleep clinic in the region, and saw the full spectrum of sleep disorders. "When I started seeing people come off blood pressure medication they'd been on for 10 years — I was hooked."

She became obsessed and started telling everyone — especially Leah. They started doing free presentations to anyone who would listen. They learned to podcast at the public library, recording between Leah's night shifts and Marlee's morning shifts. Their friend Lexi finally said: "Why is this your hobby? Let's make this a business."

And Sleep Works was born.

Marlee

The one who fell in love with sleep first. After struggling with insomnia herself, she found her way into a sleep disorder lab and discovered what happens when people finally get the right help. Her superpower: spotting the patterns you can't see yourself.

"I got into healthcare because I wanted to help people heal — but in critical care, you stabilize people and move on. You rarely see them get better. When I found sleep medicine and started seeing people come off blood pressure medication they'd been on for 10 years, relationships improving, mental health turning around — I realized sleep was the thing underneath everything. That's when I knew."

Got into sleep because she'd lived it — and because Marlee wouldn't stop talking about it. She knows exactly what it feels like to have anxiety around sleep, to wonder every night if it's going to be a three-hour night or a six-hour night. Her superpower: connecting with people and meeting them where they're at.

"I went into shift work because I figured — I'm already up all night, might as well get paid for it. I'd made peace with never sleeping well. Then Marlee wouldn't stop talking about sleep science, and I started realizing: the thing I'd been white-knuckling through my whole life wasn't permanent. That changed everything for me — and now I get to show other people the same thing."

What we believe

Your body already knows how to sleep.

The world is just moving in a direction that's not allowing for it. We help you remove what's in the way.

Insomnia is learned — which means it can be unlearned.

Whether your brain learned it 6 months ago or 20 years ago, the process is the same.

Sleep isn't something you force. It's something you allow.

The harder you try, the more awake you become. We help you stop trying so hard.

You haven't tried everything — because we haven't had a conversation yet.

If you feel like nothing works, you're exactly who this works for.

It was such a relief. I realized I wasn’t totally broken. My body knew what to do. I stopped spiraling and started being kind to myself. I stopped trying to be the perfect sleeper. I started giving myself grace.

I used to wake up thinking about how tired I was and fall asleep worrying about the night ahead. Now, I just live my life. I have space in my brain for the things I actually care about. My mental health has drastically improved.

I used to dread bedtime. I used to feel broken. Now I feel peaceful, hopeful, rested, and alive. I’m planning travel, I’m living differently, and I want other people to feel this way too.

I’m not afraid of bedtime anymore. I used to dread it. I’d get anxious as the day wore on, knowing I wouldn’t sleep. Now I go to bed and think, I’ve got my device. I’ll sleep.

It changed my entire life. I’m happier. I’m more relaxed. I’m not walking through my day in a fog. I’m not on edge anymore.

I identify as a good sleeper. I don’t really complain about sleep anymore. I used to think about it every day. I don’t think about it anymore. It’s a burden I don’t carry.

You will get to sleep.
